PMEA is monitoring a newly announced Trump Administration proposal that could impose a 25% tariff on imported brass-wind instruments, as well as related parts and accessories. The proposal would add these products to tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, a federal trade authority used when imports are determined to threaten to impair U.S. national security.

The proposal treats brass-wind instruments and related products as derivative metal articles connected to steel, aluminum, and copper supply-chain and domestic-manufacturing concerns.

At this time, the proposal has not been finalized. PMEA recognizes that an increase in instrument and repair-part costs could create additional challenges for school music programs, families, retailers, and repair providers, particularly as communities work to ensure equitable access to high-quality music education.
